Assistant Professor of Military Science
Captain Kyle B. Vonderheide was born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Military History. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery.
After completion of the Basic Officer Leader Course Phases II and III he was assigned as the Patriot Launching Station Platoon Leader for Alpha Battery, 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in Hanau, Germany. As part of Joint Task Force-East in 2008, he deployed his platoon as motorized Infantry to Novo Selo, Bulgaria to assist in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) training mission. Subsequently, he served as Executive Officer, Charlie Battery, 5/7 ADA in Kaiserslautern, Germany. His final assignment in Germany was as the AN/TPY-2 Sensor Management Operations Officer responsible for providing radar surveillance support to U.S. European Command and allies.
In 2011, he was selected to command Delta Detachment, 1st Space Company at Misawa Air Base, Japan. As commander of one of four Joint Tactical Ground Stations (JTAGS) worldwide, his organization provided continuous missile warning and alert data to US political and military leadership. After 29 months, he relinquished command of the Shogun Detachment in September 2013. He immediately attended the Air Defense Artillery Captains Career Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma earning Honor Graduate distinction at its conclusion in April 2014. In May 2014 CPT Vonderheide deployed to the CENTCOM AOR serving as the Operations Officer and Exercise Director for the Air Force Central Command (AFCENT) Integrated Air and Missile Defense Center located in the United Arab Emirates. Alongside joint and coalition allies in the AFCENT Air Warfare Center, he organized joint & multi-national exercises involving air, ground and naval forces postured to defend regional geopolitical assets against air threats. After completing his assignment in the United Arab Emirates in June 2015, he was assigned to the University of Notre Dame’s Military Science Department.
Captain Vonderheide earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy and a Master of Arts from the University of Texas at El Paso in Leadership Studies. His decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 2), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon, Army Basic Space Badge and Basic Parachutist Badge. His military education includes the Air Defense Artillery Basic Officer and Captain Career Courses, AN/TPY-2 Forward-Based X-Band Radar Sensor Manager Qualification Course, Joint Tactical Ground Station Initial Qualification Course, Army Space Cadre Basic Course, and the United States Strategic Command Ballistic Missile Defense Planner and Staff Courses.
