Assistant Professor of Military Science
Captain Matthew T. Wheeler is from Gaylord, Michigan. He was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in 2009. He graduated from Olivet Nazarene University with a Bachelor’s degree in History. Captain Wheeler also has a Master’s Certificate in Military Geological Engineering, and a Master’s of Science degree in Geological Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology.
Captain Wheeler began his career with 2nd Brigade Combat Team 101st Airborne Division Air Assault, where he served as the Assistant Brigade Engineer. He deployed to Afghanistan as the Task Force Engineer to 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) 10-11. Upon arrival back to Fort Campbell Captain Wheeler served as a Sapper Platoon Leader for Alpha Company, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion where they received the honor of being the top Engineer Company in FORSCOM. CPT Wheeler was selected to serve as an Engineer Advisor to the Afghan National Army (ANA) on a Security Forces Advise and Assist Team in support of OEF 13. In May of 2013, Captain Wheeler attended the Engineer Captains Career Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Following his graduation from the Engineer Captains Career Course, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division where he served as the Assistant Engineer Operations Officer in the Division Engineer Cell as well as the Assistant S3 for HHBN. Most recently, he has served as the Headquarters Support Company Commander for the 82nd Airborne Division since 24 April 2015.
Captain Wheeler’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal w/ 4 bronze oak leaf, Army Achievement Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Presidential unit Citation and a Meritorious Unit Award. He has earned the Combat Action Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge.
